What is ArtNet?
ArtNet Artist-Run Initiative is an initiative by artists and individuals involved with artistic activities. Its aim is the collective organization of the artistic community of Thessaloniki, targeting to the identification of the problems that afflict it, in order to address or improve them.
Artist-Run Initiative? What does that mean?
Artist-Run Initiative (ARI) is a model which perpetuates alternative (and often non-hierarchical) modes of organisation, a non-commercial approach to producing art and culture, it supports and develops experimental or unrepresented forms of practice and discourse. It proposes a model of social and cultural interaction that could be seen to eschew the roles of producer and consumer. Artist-run spaces play a vital role in supporting artists’ practices at the early stages of their careers, and often have a key stake (albeit aprecarious one) in the revitalisation of derelict urban areas [The AIM Network Artists ' Initiatives Meetings, Stockholm, 2017]
Okay, but how do we approach these problems?
So far, our approach is aimed at: Data collection of the artistic activity of Thessaloniki. Recording and mapping all the artistic and hybrid-artistic spaces in the city. Collection of data through questionnaires addressed to artistic spaces and artists. Search for funding sources and obtain know-how in terms of seeking and submitting funding applications from EU and other bodies. Collection of experiences about successful and/or failed relevant projects. Free distribution of the results and data of the research, through an online platform. Event notifications, open calls, actions, collaborations with artists etc. through our online platform. Anything else proposed to the assemblies.
That is, ArtNet will provide a solution to them?
No, so far we have formed a core for the ArtNet team, aiming at a basic organization of issues and a preparation. ArtNet will be formed by its members, you and us, who are interested in participating in the co-development of this project.
Ok, so as whom can I participate?
As an equal member of the assembly. ArtNet will probably be shaped in the form of an organization.
And who can participate in this initiative?
All individuals who are involved in the artistic community and put the collective improvement of the situation over their personal interest as a priority. That is, artists, members of artistic spaces, researchers, even members of other disciplines such as psychologists, political scientists, craftsmen, etc. who are interested in the operation.
If I have no experience?
There is no such precondition. As long as we can collectively shape our goals and actions for the benefit of the artistic community.
Can I suggest something too?
We look forward to hearing new proposals as we may not have covered all the issues.
Can I do my internship at ArtNet?
